How I Took the Leap Into Business and Haven't Looked Back
Let me take you back to 2019. My sweet son was just born, and between him and my lively toddler, I was fully immersed in motherhood. I had two kids in diapers at the same time -- I was in survival mode. I'm pretty sure I blacked out there for a little while. 😅
Honestly, being a mom was something I had always dreamed of, and I was finally living it! But here's the thing—I just couldn’t imagine going back to a job and paying someone else to take care of them. Being present for their development, and watching their personalities form was SO important to me. Different seasons call for different things, and during that season, being with my kids was my top priority.
However, reality hit hard. We couldn’t afford for me to stay home without contributing financially. So, I did some quick math, and realized I needed to make at least $1,000 per month to help with expenses on top of my husband's income.
Enter: desperation. I began researching like a woman on a mission.
If you know anything about me, it’s that when I set my mind to something, I make it happen. Seriously, nothing gets in my way. After some digging, I found a program specifically for moms that teaches how to start a freelance business from home. And even though we didn’t really have the extra money at the time, I pulled out my credit card and convinced my husband to take a bet on me. I promised I’d make it work and that we’d get that money back (and then some!).
I dove headfirst into that course. I didn’t just learn the material, I lived it. I remember staying up later than usual to consume content. I remember spending days in my office area with my toddler and baby playing on the floor near me while I starting pouring ideas onto paper. I had to make this work.
So, I leaned into the amazing community that came along with the course I was taking. I reached out to a few other women and we created an accountability group. Shout-out to Emma and Taylor! We met weekly to hold each other accountable for our goals.
One of my goals? Earning $4,000 per month. It seemed huge, almost impossible. But I was laser-focused. I plastered the number everywhere—on my computer background, my phone, around the house—anything to keep that goal front and center.
And guess what? Within two months, I hit that $4,000 goal. I was floored.
I remember so many late evenings, so many days of watching my husband play with my kids in the backyard from my office while I plugged away, so many overwhelming and exhausting days, so much stretching myself outside of my comfort zone.
Fast forward to now, 2024.
I’ve been my own boss for almost five years and every single month my business has helped support my family in some capacity. I’ve had some really big months and some dips (because, let’s be real, business isn’t linear—if you know, you know). I've had clients that I've worked with for YEARS, and others that were short-term projects.
Sometimes, I still can’t believe it. If you’re reading this and you’re feeling stuck or desperate for a way to work from home, know that it is possible. It’s not easy, and it won’t be a straight path, but if I can do it, so can you. Make clear goals, stay focused on why you want this, and lean into a community of like-minded people.
Reach out if I can help encourage you! You've got this, friend!
